This assignment has two parts -
one - can you mix paint constistently to match a color.
two - can you assemble these colors to make squares in such a way as to make a color change the way it appears depending on where it's placed in a square and what colors are surounding it?
First let's read from Wikipedia - Josef Albers, Homage to the Square, 1965
Accomplished as a designer, photographer, typographer, printmaker, and poet, Albers is best remembered for his work as an abstract painter and theorist. He favored a very disciplined approach to composition. Most famous of all are the hundreds of paintings and prints that make up the series, Homage to the Square. In
this rigorous series, begun in 1949, Albers explored chromatic interactions with nested squares.
Usually painting on Masonite, he used a palette knife with oil colors and often recorded the colors he used on the back of his works. Each painting consists of either three or four squares of solid planes of color nested within one another, in one of four different arrangements and in square formats ranging from 406×406 mm to 1.22×1.22 m.[10]
Your assignment is to find samples of colors from magazines - three distinct hues in a color family. unlike the photo example you will use the three primary colors and three secondary colors. (red, yellow, blue, green, purple, orange.)
Paste them on paper and see if you can mix the same color with tempra paint - make sure you can make the same sample again and again. Make notes on what colors you mixed with what to get the result you wanted?
DO NOT USE BLACK TO DARKEN A COLOR. ALWAYS BRING DARK TO LIGHT, OTHERWISE YOU WILL BE ADDING THE LIGHTER COLOR AND MAKING FAR TOO MUCH PAINT...
Next - set up nesting squares - should be four inches on the outside. You can put the interior squares in diffierent places but they must be centered and nested. There should be 16 total squares.

in your finished work try combining colors by - value, by chroma - all the same or all different.
experiment how many different way you can get a color to apear .... lighter, darker, nearer or farther? What can you conclude about color relationships?
