beginning value drawing

9/19/2017

on a 9"x12" sheet of paper - landscape format - draw this image using only value with the pastel chalk and vine charcoal. Use only value NOT lines.  We are drawing the surface not the edges. Make sure the subjects take up most of the page.

Picture

start your drawing with a light gray chalk and do the basic outline of the shape.
then start with your lighter values and work up to the darker ones blending the values for smooth transitions. Leave the paper white where you need to show the highlights.
Add the black ONLY at the last.
MAKE SURE your marks follow the direction of the surface you are drawing
Pay attention to the edges
- note when the edge of the pepper - the subject - is lighter than the background or the background is lighter than the subject.

if you've drawn the peppers - do the rose.

how does color printing work.

all color printing works by using layers. Usually we start with the lightest color, yellow, then the red (magenta) the blue (cyan) then black. Think about this when you are layering colors.

how to sign an art work on paper

Note - on the right is the title - or 'untitled' if you can't think of one. In the middle is the edition number. If you have 10 of the same print the first one will be 1/10, then 2/10... if you do not have an 'edition' of identical prints then you write -'artist's proof'. Next is the date and on the far left side is your signature. Use a PENCIL and write small. The writing will be visible inside the mat window.

Goals for block printing.

Step one - make a set of good black and white - and mono color prints prints. Make at least ten (that would be 70% or a C grade. Make more for a better grade. The idea is to over print many of them.

Picture

Step two - over print most of the black prints with color in selected areas - use small rollers to roll different areas or mix ink on trays to make 'rainbow rolls of color.

Step three will be to use the back of your block - or an extra one if we have one to make another color layer or layers to add detail and color to the print.

landscapes - big and small

10/29/2015

Name the parts of a landscape painting -

foreground, middleground, background, sky

what is a still life picture? What are the parts of it?

Your next assignment is to do a landscape painting. You can work in tempera or acrylic. You may do a large landscape or a close up 'macro-landscape'
It needs to be from an original photo.
It needs -
a place of focus
at least 3 layers of space - can be
shallow for macro but must have layers
must have color on all layers - no blacked out sunset hills

you will need to put the drawing into an ipad sketch program to get the big shapes for the drawing. see this link That along with your source photo need to be on your working blog.
Some examples below - notice the second two macro landscapes have contrasting and ironic items added.
